Hello my friends. I've got a friend landing at VCE and going to the city (she hss not decided yet if Mestre or somewhere near S.Lucia/P. Roma).
Do you know of a mobile phone store where she can get an Italian cellphone and/or SIM card either at the VCE airport or somewhere in the city, maybe in or near the station? (I'll get her the Codice Fiscale.)
Roberto, THIS Website may provide the information you're looking for. From what I've seen in Italy (and elsewhere in Europe), mobile phone shops are ubiquitous, so your friend shouldn't have any problems finding one. Another option would be to buy an inexpensive phone here from E-Bay or one of the "travel phone" firms such as Roam Simple, Cellular Abroad, Call In Europe, Telestial, Mobal or EuroBuzz. The phone could be used either with a SIM purchased in Italy or from one of the above firms. One that I checked is offering SIM cards for $9. The advantage of that approach is that your friend would have a working phone as soon as he/she steps off the plane. Which option to choose will depend to some extent on the anticipated uses for the phone (ie: in-country calls, back to the U.S., mostly texts, etc.). Buona Fortuna!
Roberto, I can't say for sure if there is one inside the airport or stazione but I know for sure that there are a few close to the the stazione in Venice. Go out of the station and take a left and you'll pass by a handful of them, just look for the Wind, Tim, Vodaphone signs.
The major provider in Italy is TIM. Here's a link to their website where you can search for locations of vendors: http://tinyurl.com/TimShops I tried to set the link to show you Venice.
I've been to this one from Ken's list. They had a lot of choices. I picked up a SIM for my unlocked phone. Il Telefonino (Official TIM boutique - Alice) Rio Terá Farsetti, 1412/1412b Phone: +39 041 244 85 25 Reasonable distance from the station. People were nice. It's on a small campiello.
