Our cruise stops in Missini. I've read lots of reviews and travelers suggest we head straight to Taormina and skip Missini all together. (Travelling with 6 adults ages 17-48) Taormina looks stunning! thoughts?

Sicily is fabulous; Messina, not so much (not that it's a bad place). If you have time to go elsewhere, I would. Taormina is a beautiful place in a beautiful setting. It will be thronged with people who are well aware of its attractions, but I think most people would agree that it's your best bet on a cruise stop in Messina.
Your group is large enough that it may be totally affordable to take a taxi. There is train service from Messina Marittima Station (which surely sounds as if it's near the port), but the train will take at least an hour, and the train station for Taormina is down at beach level, whereas the historic town is way up on a hill, requiring a bus or taxi for the last bit of the trip. A taxi from the cruise port will be more efficient. I'd check cruisecritic.com for tips on that. (I've never been on a cruise.)
