Missing train transfer

If I miss my train transfer using "point-to-point" ticket ,can I still use the same ticket for the next train schedule?

It depends on the kind of ticket you have.

It would help us to give you a better answer if you tell us your departure city and your arrival city. Also tell us if you bought a discounted ticket or if you paid “base” price (full fare).

If it’s a freccia (high speed) train and you booked a discounted ticket (nonrefundable & unchangeable), then you’re out of luck [Please read clarification by Frank (below)]

If you’re traveling on a Regionale train, then your ticket is valid for 4 hours after you’ve validated it, so in this case you can take the next train.

I'm travelling from Venice to Frankfurt, Germany. Haven't bought the ticket yet, but I noticed that there are at least 3 transfers for between 5-7 minute intervals. Thanks for responding.

There's a one-connection train through Milan: depart Venice at 8:20, into Milan at 10:45; depart 11:23, arrive Frankfurt 18:59. That's probably how I'd go if taking the train - but I too might consider flying. Lufthansa has several direct flights a day that take about 90 minutes flying time.

A couple of points -- if you have a reserved seat and miss the train because the first train is late then they will give you a new ticket. If it is an open ticket then you can get on the next train with open seating.

....If it’s a freccia (high speed) train and you booked a discounted ticket (nonrefundable & unchangeable), then you’re out of luck. ....... That is false ! If the train is at fault - late - then they will give you a new ticket if you go to the ticket window and they will know if the train was late. But if the train is on time but you miss it because you are slow, having a second beer, too long in the water closet, etc., then you are out of luck.

Hi Frank,

If the train is at fault - late - then they will give you a new ticket if you go to the ticket window and they will know if the train was late. But if the train is on time but you miss it because you are slow, having a second beer, too long in the water closet, etc., then you are out of luck.

Thanks for clarifying!

I should have added that information to my comment.

Air--80 minutes flying time. Cost $25-$125

Train-- 10.5 to 17 hrs, at least one change and as many as 4 changes. Cost $60- $137 As best I can tell any train fare for under $100 arrives at midnight

Why is a train journey being considered?

Prices are for random dates in April

I guess to see mountain scenery, but looking at a random April date, I don't see anything with less than 10 minute connection time.

Thank you all for your responses. I know flying is cheaper and quicker but I would like the experience. Is the scenery worth the long train ride? What is an open ticket and does it cost more?

The scenery through the alps varies from great to amazing, depending on the route.

The routes through Switzerland utilize base tunnels that burrow under the Alps. I see one that goes through Austria that uses the Brenner Pass route with shorter tunnels and more mountain views.
