Milano to Cannes to Milano!

Dear Fellow Travelers:

My wife and I got a great airfare from Justfly.com from DFW to Milano for $380us per ticket. So we couldn't say no. Turns out a friend is celebrating his 50th birthday in Cannes in the middle of our trip. So we have eight days to see Italy/France and work our way to Cannes, and three days to get back to Milano for the return flight. Total on continent time is 12 days. I was planning on renting a car. And we do have tour reservations the day before we depart to walk Milano and see The Last Supper, so aside from that we have no plans.

Our original thought was to get to Provence as quickly as possible and see as much there as possible, but the more we looked at Italy, we got caught up in the following travel itinerary:

Depart Milano immediately upon our arrival and go to: Belgamo, Como, Turin, Monte Carlo, Eze, Cannes, Mougins, Gorges Du Verdon and Lac de St. Cassien and to finish our trip, return the car at Milano and be footloose there the last two or three days.

We enjoy great food, out of the way discoveries, wines and wineries, moderate walks and hiking, vistas, history, fine arts and cultural experiences. Hotels ought to be comfortable and tidy but they needn't be posh or expensive in taste or price.

Thoughts?

Merci! Grazie!

based on your hotel needs try European based Ibis Hotels
search by each city you intend to go to
http://www.ibis.com/gb/northamerica/index.shtml

where to eat: avoid anywhere you go places where there is someone outside trying to get you to come in
& where there pictures of the food; to save time finding good restaurants ask for recommendations from the concierge at your hotel

Out of the way discovery you might like at Eze : There is a nice hike up or down with great views of the Mediterean Sea called the Nietsche pass https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g187222-d545927-Reviews-Nietzsche_Path-Eze_French_Riviera_Cote_d_Azur_Provence.html

When is your trip?

Since you will have a car on this trip, I'd encourage you to pay particular attention to places that are not so accessible via public transportation. That would include the Gorges du Verdon. I'd pick up a guidebook that covers southern France well and see whether there are other such spots. I say this as someone going to France later this year who will not have the benefit of a car. I'd be tempted to head straight west from Milan, not starting in Bergamo and Como, since they can be so easily reached by train and are not on the direct path toward France (unlike Torino).

There may be some Riviera destinations to which you'll want to travel by rail on day-trips to avoid highway delays, but that will depend on where you decide to base yourselves.

Hotel de France in the Condamine section of Monaco is a small, basic b&b which enabled us to stay in a posh area for a very reasonable price. Keep checking back on the website because the hotel offers special rates. Nothing fancy, but parking is offered inexpensively, and great access by bus and train to the Cote d'azur. It took about 20 minutes to get to Eze and also convenient to the (I highly recommend) Ephrussi de Rothschild villa in St. Tropez. Your trip sounds amazing.

In that case, investigate the route to the gorge carefully. ViaMichelin offers two options, and one may be better that the other during the winter. I see mountain passes in your future, potentially. (I'm just looking at a map, though; I haven't been there.)
