Milano Hotels near the Duomo

We'll, I hope, be staying for one night, tentatively 12 September, near the Duomo in Milano, and leaving the next morning for a morning flight at Malapensa. A contributor here has nicely mentioned a hotel the minimum rate for which is 281 Euros, about 80 to 100 Euros over our budget. We were hoping, alternatively, for RS recommendations in the Duomo neighborhood, e.g., the Hotel Grand Duca di York or the Hotel Spadari, both of which are not available on our chosen date. We'd welcome additional suggestions here for Duomo neighborhood hotels in which the writers were pleased with their experiences.

Both those hotels are available on Booking.com ( through Tripadvisor), but the price is high, like 220 euro for the Duca di York and over 300 for the Spadari al Duomo. I think the problem is that is a Monday night; weekends are cheaper in Milan. You might have a look at Una Hotel Maison ; they have advance booking discounts that may help.

Thanks for the tips, Lola, Oddly the direct websites for the Duca di York and the Spadari al Duomo indicated affordable for us (up to 200 Euros) rates for us but showed neither were available on 12 September. The recommended Una Hotel Maison was available at a best advance rate of 239 Euros. Jim

Can you change by one night? The Grand Duca di York has rooms for 190 on both the 11th and the 13th. Milan is expensive, no doubt about that. We compensated for our room prices buy getting a picnic dinner of foccacia sandwiches at Princi bakery. With a bottle of wine and broccoli salad from the deli across the street, our dinner for four came to a grand total of 23 euros. And those foccacia sandwiches are wonderful. Everything at that bakery is wonderful. We went back for breakfast and also bought more sandwiches for our train ride.

Last September, we stayed at the Best Western Hotel Major which is located right by a metro stop. Milan's metro system is great. You can be at the Duomo in a very short amount of time. This hotel was very modern and had a great buffet breakfast. I just checked your date and there are rooms starting at 114 euros. There's also a Best Western by the airport. We had a great stay at both hotels. By the way, the Best Westerns in Europe are a lot nicer than here in the States.

I've been reading excellent reviews of Hotel Berna which is near the train station, so easy transport to sites and then airport the following day.

I realize you asked for a Duomo hotel, but you will notice RS says that neighborhood is more expensive. I stayed at the family run Berna Dec. 2010 and enjoyed it very much. Lovely people and comfortable lobby and room.
They have a variety of room types and discounts online. Your night could be as low as 143 euros including a very good breakfast buffet. They are a block away from the station and by using the underground you can avoid the crazy traffic circle. From the station it is only a few stops to the Duomo- very easy. What you save you can spend on a nice dinner and be close to transport.
