Milano Finale

After 25 years, my husband and I are very much looking forward to returning to Europe this May for a month of travel through England, France, and Italy. Our trip will end in Milan and we've already arranged tickets for the Duomo rooftop and Last Supper viewing, have a food tour booked, and plan to visit the Navigli neighborhood.

But, I wanted to ask if anyone had any suggestions for “off the beaten path” sights or experiences?. The quirkier and more unusual the better! Or, better yet, places where you can just be a "temporary Milano local" as Rick says!

TIA!

Chiesa di San Bernardino alle Ossa - The church has a baroque chapel decorated with thousands human bones and skulls from the nearby hospital cemetery. (Now the hospital is Milan state university and the hospital is in modern buildings). I think you cannot get much quirkier.

We have started and ended several trips in Milan. Milan is filled with creative modern architecture and is a great city in which to walk and take in the views. Our favorite route is from Milano Centrale by side streets to the Brera across a number of plazas and spectacular buildings. Once in the Brera, we like to lunch at Bacco di Brera and watch as the design workers pass by in great style on their way to or from lunch. Near the restaurant is the Pinacoteca di Brera which is open to the public to view and has a small arboretum in the back of the building. If you exit through the back of the arboretum you can wonder the streets and peek at the famous design studios of Milan. You eventually after wondering the sides streets can reach La Scala and from there are near the galleria and the cathedral.

I'm not sure these are "off the beaten path", but certainly not on everyone's list in Milan. Visit San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore for it's stunning interior. And for the best gelato, visit Ciacco. Some very unusual flavors to be found. Celery gelato was on the menu when I was there.

Thank you all so much for your wonderful ideas on things to do in Milan. I've made note of them all and will report back after the trip!
