I was considering purchasing a Milano card for my one day in Milan. Is it worth purchasing just for transportation around town. Does it help with transportation from Malpensa to the city center?

You can just buy a day pass at most Tabacchi (news stand/cigarette shop), they're pretty cheap. Malpensa to Milan you need to buy a train or bus ticket. The train is 12 euro. Go to Milano Cadorna station to be close to the Duomo. Go to Milano Centrale for most of the moderate priced hotels and trains to elsewhere in Italy. They are different trains, so mind which one you get on. They're every half hour. Both stations have subway stations.
