Traveling July 1 2016 Milan with wife and 3 teen girls. Milan one night then to Palermo
Need help good area to spend night in Milan then Palermo area renting car in Palermo to visit homes of grandparents in Trabia and Prizzi 3 days there
jabco,
I'd probably stay either close to Milano Centrale or Milano Cadorna, as that would provide easy access to the airport the following day. Of the two, Cadorna provides a slightly quicker trip to the airport and is closer to the Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele if you have time for a bit of sightseeing. Via Dante is also close with lots of shops and restaurants. The guidebook has listings for hotels in both areas.
How are you getting from Milan to Palermo? Which airline you're using will be a factor in the transportation as well.
Thanks much we fly out 945am from lunate on Alitalia and airport looks much closer to Milan.
Do you mean Linate airport? There is no train service, but there is this shuttle service. There is a coach from Centrale operated by StarFly. No personal experience, though. Some additional info on the Milan airports visitors guide site.
BTW, highly recommend Hotel Berna, a short walk from Centrale.
jabco,
Thanks for the additional information. For a trip to Linate, staying near Milano Centrale would be good (although as Laurel mentioned, Linate does not have rail service). The airport is close to town so transportation is relatively easy. These are the options. One hotel you might consider is Hotel Garda, which is very comfortable and literally a five minute walk from the station (I've timed it).
Thanks to all with 5 in family had to get two rooms and scored at the Hotel Berna. Great prices and a fantasic buffet breakfast that is worth about $15 a person. I am using shuttle direct , door to door service and very nice prices. Thanks for all the help.
Now on to finding a spot outside of Palermo, and then Paris and I think I am done. uggg watch those cheap flights most only include carryon and the weight and size is so small,

That's true, but you can pay to check a bag. If you pay for the bag online before you get to the airport, it's usually not too expensive; it's more if you wait until you get to the airport, and much more if you get caught with an oversize bag at the gate and have to pay then to check it.
So, just pay for a checked bag at the time you buy your ticket. If you already bought your ticket, go back into your reservation and add the checked bag.
Hotel Berna (as mentioned above by Laurel) is fantastic. Its a 5min walk to Milano Centrale and has a great breakfast in the mornings.
Restaurants on the same street as Berna are a disappointment though so eat elsewhere for lunch/dinnertime meals.
