My wife and I are in Milano taking an Italian language intensive class for two weeks. We have the weekend free (Friday at 14:00 through Sunday evening) and would like to get out of the city and visit new areas. Kind of last minute (I usually plan in advance!). We're planning to spend the night Friday in or near Venice (probably "near" to save money) and then explore Venice for the day Saturday. (We're going to spend the night Sunday with friends in Mantova.) We'll be travelling by public transit only, but would love some advice on the following:
- Any input on staying "close to" Venice--agritourismo in a small village for example? Or should we rather stick to a hotel right off the main islands of Venice?
- Any input on other towns / villages / countryside we could readily visit? For a change from bustling Milan we'd enjoy something small, rustic, quaint, and quiet :).
