Hello! I will be travelling to Italy in September with my parents. We are determining 3 major areas for our trip...Rome, Tuscany/Florence and then either Venice or Milan. Non of us has been to either Venice or Milan. Would one of these be a good choice or rather somewhere like Naples/Amalfi Coast?? Thanks for your help. :)
Kim, you'll really benefit from getting yourself a copy of the Rick Steves Italy 2013 book. That will allow you to read about lots of places and then pick the ones that most appeal to you. But in this case, the answer is Venice. I find it hard to imagine that anyone who has been to both would recommend Milan over Venice for a first-time visit to Italy. Happy travels.
Kim, Venice, Venice, Venice! Don't think there is another city in the world like it.

Definitely Venice. If you can, try to fly into Venice and return from Rome with a Multi-City ticket (aka Open Jaw). Your itinerary: From North America > fly to Venice > Train to: Florence (visit Tuscany) > Train to Rome > Fly to North America If you want to add Naples/Amalfi Coast, unless you find a flight out of Naples do the following: From North America > fly to Venice > Train to: Florence (visit Tuscany) > Train to Naples/Amalfi Coast (by-pass Rome) > Train back to Rome > Fly to North America
Venezia!
Definitely Venice! It's True Italy! Milan is a big city and business center. I would go there for business, but for a vacation/touring definitely Venice!
kim, I most definitely agree with donna! Venice will be a much better and more interesting destination than Milan (IMHO). While Milan has it's charms (and of course The Last Supper), Venice is a truly unique location with an interesting history. Happy travels!
As much as I love Milan, I say go to Venice if you've never been - especially early in the morning and after sunset, when the trippers and cruisers will be gone and you can really enjoy the magic of the city.
Venezia!!!
add me into the Venice gang! Milan was...meh...the Duomo is nice...that was about it for us...but, you would have advantage of taking a day trip to Lake Como if you felt like it, but Venice all the way for me...
Hi all! Thanks so much for your input! Looking forward to our trip! :)
