Milan Venice trip - hotels, tours, etc

We'll (4 with two young adult sons) be traveling to Milan and Venice, then ending in Innsbruck for my son's study abroad in June. How long do we need in each city? Hotel or VRBO suggestions? Concerned about luggage storage on check out day if we still want to tour, so I'm leaning towards hotels. Should we drive between Milan and Venice or take the train? Best group tours? We'll be arriving on a Wednesday in Milan and need to be in Innsbruck by the following Monday. This is our first time to Italy, so any help or "must sees" would be appreciated.

Should we drive between Milan and Venice or take the train?

There are frequent trains from Milan to Venice.
You may check schedules on
trenitalia.com & Italitreno.it
You’ll need the train station names as follow:
- Milano Centrale
- Venezia S. Lucia

I’d suggest getting a couple of guidebooks to help you decide what you’d like to see and do.
Keep in mind that some sites require booking tickets in advance.

Enjoy your time in beautiful Italy!

I’ve not been to Milan, but have been to Venice twice now, and plan to go back at any opportunity. As mentioned, just wandering the streets and riding the vaporetto can be the best experience. Pick one day to purchase a day pass for the vaporetto and ride the length of the grand canal, getting off to explore things that interest you, then also ride the whole loop after dark when all the building lights are on. Pop over to Murano if you are interested in glass and glass blowing (it’s only two stops from Fondementa Nove). Burano is the island known for lace making, but it is further out and you may not have time to go there (it’s very pretty, though). Rick Steves has a good walking tour you can follow, and an audio for the Frari church you can download.

Suggest Wed. and Thur. for Milan. Leave Milan late Thur. and go to Venice. That will give you three full days in Venice, which will just scratch the surface.

Also suggest you get an early start one day in Venice and go to Murano and Burano. Should take about 3/4 of a day, but well worth it as they are lovely places to visit but without as many crowds as in Venice proper.

For a hotel in Venice, google Pensione Gueratto and see what you think. It's located in Rialto Bridge area and we've been pleased each time we've stayed there. If you do stay there, we can give you a short cut to cut down on the walking to the hotel with luggage.

No need to rent a car; good train service between the two cities.

And of course, Venice to Innsbruck is an easy train trip. Venezia Sant Lucia to Verona Porta Nuova station, change to EC train to Innsbruck.
