Milan/Tuscany/Amalfi Coast Travel

My husband and I are celebrating our 20th anniversary in Sept in Italy. We have our airline tickets and hotels but now I'm working on travel between locations. We are flying into and out of Milan ($500 per person steal on Emirates!) so I am looking for recommendations on how best to get from Milan to Tuscany where we'd like to rent a car. After 5 days we will head down to the Amalfi Coast for 5 days (which I know not to have a car there after reading so much!). After that we will head back to Milan to fly home.

Any suggestions on planes, trains or cars, where to take to and from and where to pick up/drop off a car are greatly appreciated!

Hi Erin,

You can take the train from Milan to Chiusi, just south of Florence - check out www.trenitalia.com

for new timetables that are posted. You will need to pick up a rental car, and I believe this is possible in Chiusi, so that you can explore the Chianti hills and towns such as Montepulciano and Pienza. In 2010, I stayed in the small village of Montefollonico, opposite Montepulciano in the Hotel Epoca - gorgeous! Their website is http://www.lacosta.it/

which towns in Tuscany do you have in mind?

The capital of Tuscany is Florence, and you would do best to take a train from Milan to Florence. Many rent a car to see the countryside and the hilltowns of Tuscany and Northern Umbria.
The Amalfi Coast and Sorrento is southeast of Naples and about 200 miles south of Rome. Needless to say it's a long way from there back to Milan to fly home.
Have you considered visiting the Cinque Terre instead of the Amalfi Coast? You could return your rental car in La Spezia and take a local train a short ride into the C/T. Then you could take a train back north to Milan to fly home.

RJean - we haven't done much of the planning yet for which cities to visit in Tuscany. I'd love any suggestions!

Hi Erin, welcome to the forum.

If your lodging is not paid for and has a reasonable cancellation policy see if this will work for you.

On arrival, and since you'll be at the airport, fly from MXP to Naples (NAP). Both Alitalia and Meridian have several flights a day. They're relatively inexpensive and takes 1:20 min.

Arrive in Naples and take the Curreri Viaggi bus (10€ 1:15min )from the airport to Sorrento, (if that's where you intend to stay). If you're staying on the Amalfi Coast, a private driver would be your best means of transportation.

After your 5 days head to Tuscany. Both the train and a rental car will take about the same amount of time. You could even pick a rental up in Sorrento. The choice is yours, just be aware there are some rules of the road in Italy you need to know.

If you could tell us what you wish to do in Tuscany, we would be better able to make recommendations. Do you want to visit wineries, do a cooking class, visit a spa... give us some ideas.

In Tuscany drop the car in Florence. Then train back to Milan for your flight home.

Another question, do you suggest we book train tickets prior to going? Or purchase when we arrive? Thanks for the suggestions!! Super helpful!

Hey Erin,

Book the train tickets in advance for better pricing.

Here are some notable Tuscan towns and accommodations that might be of interest to you.

The towns of Greve, Arezzo, Panzano, Pienza and Castellina are good to set up a base for exploring the region. You can spend 3 to 4 days in that region.

Tuscan Towns to visit - Lucca, Siena, San Gimignano, Montepulciano, Volterra, and Pisa.
