Milan, Trieste or ???

Because of some travel nightmares, we got a credit for a train ride we missed from Venice with Italiarail. We need to use it or lose it. We’re spending a couple nights in Venice and are looking to do a day trip from Venice to use up the train credit this Thursday or Friday. I’m wondering if anybody has any favorite day trips from Venice. Right now, we’re looking at Milan, Bassanob Del Grappa, Peschierabdel Garda or Trieste but are pretty open. We really want to check out the Dolomites but since it’s only a day trip, we’re not sure how much or far we’ll able to see.

Thanks in advance.

Ps. We have been to San Gimignano, Sienna and Florence.

How much is the credit?
Milan is pretty far. I'd consider closer places that are even nicer, such as: Verona, Vicenza, Padova, Ferrara, even Ravenna or Bologna.

Is it really worth running around just to use a train credit? I would consider it a sunk cost and just soak up some more Venice (unless of course you have somewhere you really want to go — to Padua tonsee the Scrovegni Chapel, to Ravenna to see the mosaics, to Bologna to eat). . .

If you do insist on going somewhere, I like Roberto’s ideas.

Last autumn my friend and I started our 3+ weeks in Trieste and loved the city. It’s not a big tourist stop but has enough interesting sights for a two - three day visit. Great food, beautiful waterfront, interesting history. It’s very laid back and a great city in which to sip those afternoon spritzers!

Verona, without hesitation. Been to all the cities listed.
