Hi.
We will be in Milan next week for 7 days.
We are staying close to Porta Garibaldi station and I have a few questions confused about.
Our trips will be to Como, Turin, Genoa, Bologna, Bergamo and the airport and back.
Are these considered long distance trips?
Should I buy now before we leave the USA?
Is it better to start this trips from Milan Central?
Are these trips on regional or high speed trains?
Should we buy a pass 7 trips in 15 days?
Thanks so much.
Como, Bergamo, and Malpensa Airport are regional trains. Bologna, Tutrin and Genoa are long distance trains.
BTW, your best departure to Como is from Cadorna station, which is a metro ride away from Porta Garibaldi. But you can go from Porta Garibaldi with a train change at Saronno.
Thanks.
So should I make the reservations now for those 3 long distance trips?
To get a discount, you have to buy tickets, which have various refundability options. so if you know precisely where you want to go and when, buy tickets now. If things are still up in the air, wait to buy until you are sure.
Regional trains to Bergamo go from Milano Centrale, as do trains to Turin, Genoa and Bologna. There are regional trains to Turin that take 45 minutes longer than the high speed trains.
Hi, download the Trenitalia app, so you can easily purchase tickets when you’re in Italy. You don’t want some type of pass. The names are in Italian, so Milan is Milano, Turin is Torino, etc.
The faster trains, the Frecciarossa on the Trenitalia site, are loaded a few months ahead and much cheaper if you buy early. Check to see if any of the discounted tickets are still available.
Also, if you have the Trenitalia app ready to go, you can skip the ticket machines that can have long lines, especially at airport train stations. Just step to the side when you’re near the spot at the Malpensa station & buy your ticket with your app.
We are currently in Italy and traveling by train. I purchased all of our fast train (Frecciarossa) tickets months ago. While in Italy, I purchased several regional tickets on the Trenitalia app just before we arrived at the train station. Very easy. We did not have to validate any tickets because we purchased them online.
Thank you for sharing that!
Basically use the Trenitalia app or site to look up trains and prices. If the only fares you see are of the "ordinaria" type then you are looking at a fixed fare regional train, and do not need to buy in advance.
If you see fares like "base". "economy" etc... that are trains with discounts when you purchase in advance. But the "base" price is what you pay on the day itself, so if you don't mind paying a bit more you can wait with booking there as well.
You can use Porto Garibaldi as origin for your planning. There are in fact direct trains to Torino and Bologna from Garibaldi.
Great. Thank you.
Ok. Little confused about the 3 hour window at Malpensa.
Can I buy the tickets to Porta Garibaldi ahead of time like today? Our flight arrives about 18:00 On Saturday.
If I buy now say for 19:00 train is that ticket good for any train from 19:00 to 22:00?
Also coming from USA to London, switch planes then to Milan I believe terminal 1 is the correct train station.
Thanks
I don't know why you would want to buy this in advance. Download the Trenitalia app and buy when you have your luggage and know you can get to the train station in a few minutes.
Jet lag, half asleep, something always seems to happen when using these apps.
Easy enough I guess but easier If we had the tickets in our hands and didn’t have to do anything :)
For example, just went thru the whole thing to purchase tickets to Genoa and it would not accept my visa.
