Milan Train Station: Is it Safe at Night?

My husband and I will arrive at 11:30 pm in Milan Central Station. However, since we couldnt find any ticket availble from Milan to Rome, we thought of staying till morning in the station to catch an early train to Rome. We have heard and read a lot about "beware "of Milan Train stations as its not safe at all. Just want to hear from those who have experience staying overnight in Milan station.

You can't spend a night in the station. It is closed from 1.30am circa to 4.00am circa. The area surrounding the station is quite dodgy, though not particularly unsafe. Book yourself a hotel.

Mickey, I agree with the previous reply that booking a Hotel would be the best idea and then continue to Rome the following day. There are reasonable Hotels in the vicinity of Milano Centrale. You might have a look at This Hotel (be sure to tell them that you'll be a "late arrival"). Happy travels!

The area around Milano Central was one of the few areas in all of Europe I've ever felt uncomfortable. Not unsafe per se, but there are a LOT of vagrants that hang out and they can be very aggressive pan-handlers. It's not the kind of place I'd want to be around late at night.

it's not that bad, the most annoying people at the train station are the gypsies. Checkout the Starhotel Anderson right across the street, very nice hotel and convenient location.

WE stayed at Hotel Berna located a few blocks from train station. Very nice hotel and a great breakfast. Would stay here again.

Even when I lived in Milan, when it came to the train station the best advice was to keep moving. Do not stop and look at a map or dig around in your bags. You are not in any physical danger but the pickpockets are some of the best outside of Paris! It's one of the few train stations I would urge people not to hang around at, which is a shame because it's very impressive. Get a hotel. They're more expensive than most places in Italy, but you will have a much safer journey.

I stayed in a hotel within a 5 minute walk of the station ... The front desk suggested that I not walk to the station even though it was in the wee morning hours..I was catching the bus to the airport....I don't think it was a taxi scam as the taxi was under 10 euro and the conceirge talk to the driver and made sure he knew I wanted to go to the station and not the airport (100e) evidently that was another popular scam...have a happy/safe trip...jw
