Milan Train Layover Question

Hi all!

I’ll be traveling to Europe this October and found myself with an interesting situation. I’m traveling from Rome to Lucerne and going through Milan.

From what I can tell, the train leaving Milan to get to Arth-Goldau leaves very frequently. I’m arriving in Milan from Rome around 10:00. Realistically I think we can store our bags and apend 7-8 hours in Milan before finishing the travel day and getting to Lucerne.

Does anyone have any recommendations of what to see/do? I’ve already heard of going to the Duomo and we’ll probably go. What else should we see? Any museums or food?

Bag storage at Milano Centrale can be congested and slow. There are other places to store outside the train station that are smaller and less busy. I'd go to the Duomo and the Castello.... enjoy the walk between them and also walk through the Galleria.

Any good guide book with provide the common must see items. Your local library should have travel DVDs that will highlight Milan. And, of course, hit the TI for current suggestions and tours.

Many people go to Mikan specifically to see The Last Supper. It's a very tough ticket--requires being online at the precise moment tickets are put on sale, and even then you may not be successful. This topic is ducussed often here. A sear h of this Forum will turn up useful information. Be sure to screen for recent posts to get the latest info.

Note that the schedule for the Gotthard route for October is not final yet, so you can't look up the quickest route from Milan to Luzern yet. You'll need to wait till September. One common route is taking a regional train to Lugano, and change for the IC there. That route has the advantage that no trains require advance reservations, so if you are travelling on a pass you can just hop on...
