Milan Tourist Tax

Just a heads up for anyone planning on staying in a hotel in Milan. The tourist tax, introduced by the City Council with Resolution n. 19 of June 11th, 2012, applies to all non-city residents staying at hotels and at all other accommodation facilities within Milan. Revenues from the tourist tax will finance actions for the preservation of the city's artistic heritage and for the improvement of services for all tourists. The tax is in force from September 1st, 2012 and applies to each visitor with fixed rates ranging from €. 2,00 to €. 5,00 for each night of stay in accordance with the type, class and number of stars of the accommodation facility.

Noticed the tax at hotels in Florence and Rome, and even smaller towns in Italy.... they collect it separately from the hotel bill, and in cash.

I saw this tax added to most hotel bills all over Italy. Varied per town/city. As someone mentioned earlier - it goes to support tourism in each city. I just considered it part of the cost of the room.
PS: in most cases it was added to the bill. I paid for my rooms in cash, so I can't say if it was "paid separately".

Lots of cities in the US have this tax, too. In Italy I rhink it's applied for the first several days - I know when I stayed 8 nights in one hotel there was no tax charged for the last few days.
