Milan Tour Guide

When we end our Rick Steves “Small
villages” Italy tour in fall of 2023 we plan on staying in Milan for 2-3 days after. Any local guides that we should consider? Any “Must sees” that aren’t the typical tourist destination?

We loved Hotel Gran Duca du York as a local hotel close to the Duomo. The people working there were so friendly and helpful. Hotel was nice… great breakfasts and we booked the balcony rooms. Very nice.
As an art lover, I booked a visit to “The Last Supper”on Viator.
Milan is so beautiful, many pass it over, but we really loved it. Perhaps that cute hotel with the helpful staff made it more magical for us..
Enjoy!

We were just in Milan for 2 nights last week. We also stayed at the Hotel Gran Duca di York and it was wonderful, comfortable updated rooms, amazing staff and the perfect location.

We didn’t care much for Milan itself- we much prefer smaller towns but we did visit the Duomo and the Roof Terrace- that was fabulous and of course The Last Supper which was the highlight of our entire 2.5 week trip. Book your tickets for that as soon as they become available- I think about 3 months in advance.

The Monumental Cemetery is very cool

We took a taxi from Milano Centrale to Gran Duca- 12 euros and then to Milano Cadorna to catch the Malpensa Express- 7 euros

A visit to Milano should include a side trip to the Navigli district. This is several canals in the south of the city, originally designed by da Vinci. There are many many bars, restaurants, coffee shops, gelato, etc. Go for dinner, look at the lights after dark. We were there about 3 weeks ago for dinner. Great place to add to your Milano list.

Vote 3 for Hotel Gran Duca di York, lol.

I was there for a few nights a couple of weeks ago.

I also suggest booking The Last Supper directly with the venue at the website Christine gave you. I booked the 9:30 English tour given by the museum and it was excellent. If you’re on top of the ticket purchase there is no need to spend the extra money booking through the 3rd party booking agent Viator. I booked about 3 months out. Keep an eye on the ticket site as they release dates in batches.

I’m a height chicken but enjoyed the rooftop visit to the Duomo. I got the Fast Pass ticket for the lift which goes up but there are still a number of flights up from there. My ticket included the Duomo, the archeological crypt and the museum.

I also liked the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana which is literally across the street from the Gran Duca di York. I wanted to see the Codex Atlanticus which is the largest collection of Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings.

BTW, the Village Italy tour is excellent! Go to Padua a day or two before if you can!
