Milan to Venice by train

I would like to travel from Milan to Venice by train and am thinking of stopping off at Lake Garda or the Dolomites. Can you tell me which one is a better option for scenery, history or availability by public transport. Thanks, Jude

The trip itself is really wonderful and one of my best memories of our trip last year to Milan/Venice. You see the Italian Alps for a good part of the trip--and they are spectacular.
