Milan to Venice

We are flying into Milan, on our first trip to Italy, and need to get right to Venice. Is it possible to pick up some kind of transportation at airport that will take you straight to Venice? (Bus or tour) If not, we will need to take the train. I'm assuming that would mean a train to the major train station from the airport, then picking up a line to Venice. would that train be high speed? Karen

There is no direct transportation from the airport. Take the airport bus (about an hour) or the train (30 to 45 mins) to Central train stration and train from there. There are high speed trains. Use trenitalia.com

The bus is usually a little easier, right at curbside, no going up and down levels to get to/from the train platforms. BUT the bus will travel in traffic, so which is better depends on the time of day. Other that that, it's a toss-up. Be sure to go to Milan Centrale Station to change trains. Many of the trains from the airport go to Milan Cardona, which is very convenient for getting to the city, but some distance from the central train station.

You can buy your tickets to Venezia Santa Lucia (the station you want) at the airport train station but you will be on two trains. The first train goes from the airport to Milano Centrale. Milano Centrale is a large train train station. You will need to locate the large digital signboard to see on which track your next train departs. Yes, it will be a Frecci high-speed train. I hope 160MPH is OK. Still, it takes 2.5hrs to get to Venezia Santa Lucia from Milan.

Hi Karen, we made that journey in reverse a few years ago. It was quite easy. Don't forget to get your train ticket validated before you get on it, the fines, if you don't, are heavy.
You could also try posting this question on the Transport section of the Helpine, you will get even more help there.
