Milan to Varenna train tickets

Hello,

My friend and I will be flying into Milan (MXP) in mid-September on separate flights that are scheduled to arrive within an hour of each other in the afternoon. We plan to go straight from the airport to Varenna (Lake Como) by train (via Milano Centrale station). Should we purchase the train ticket from Milano Centrale to Varenna ahead of time? My concern with purchasing ahead of time is if one or both of our flights are delayed/ flight schedules change/ customs line takes longer than expected/ etc. On the other hand, I'm worried about trains being sold out or encountering long ticket lines if we do not purchase ahead of time.

Does anyone have any advice or guidance?

Thanks in advance.

Buy at the airport from one of the ticket vending machines, or use the Trenitalia App. These are regional trains, so they do not sell out. This is trivial mass transit.

Get the Trenitalia app and purchase your tickets after you get thru security

Both the Malpensa Express and train to Varenna-Esino are regional trains
Price never changes and they can’t sell out

If by chance you still miss whichever Varenna train you have purchased your ticket is good for four hours from that departing time on any same train

Tickets purchased online or on app do not need to be validated

Paper tickets purchased at kiosk do need to be validated
