Milan to Valtellina Valley

I welcome suggestions on the best way to travel from Milan to the Valtellina Valley. My husband is a winemaker in the USA and is interested in seeing this area.

I looked at taking a train to Sondrio; but, I'm not sure if we would need to hire a taxi or Uber driver to drive around the area or visit a couple wineries?

Or I read about a tour from Milan to St. Moritz that goes through the Valtellina Valley with a stop.

Or should we rent a car in Sondrio?

Thank you very much for your ideas.

I think a rental car would give you more flexibility since the many wineries in the area are out of town.
Both Hertz and Avis-Budget have offices in Sondrio. However if you prefer to drive along the Lake Como, instead of taking the train you can also rent a car in Milan.

We planned on taking the train from Varenna to Tirano, for the Bernina Express, but there was a strike so we hired a driver.

We hired him from Lake Como Transfers, and he was a Valtellina local. We enjoyed the drive so much as he told us so much about the local foods (which we tried in Tirano), and the wines.

You might want to consider contacting Lake Como Transfers and getting his contact if you don't want to drive yourselves.
