Milan to Switzerland train confusion.

Hello,

We are traveling to Sicily and taking a train to a wedding in Grindelwald, Switzerland. (I hate flying hence the train.) We are looking at google maps and Trenitalia and both show a leg from Milan to Grindelwald of 4 h 15 min if we were traveling this week (May). If we search it as traveling in July, when the wedding is, Trenitalia is showing it as a 9 hour route. I presume this is because the new schedules have not come out yet for that leg of the trip.

How does one actually know how to book future travel for a train that may take 4 hours or 9 hours? We don't want to miss the wedding and need to book hotels accordingly. Is it safe to assume that the schedule for July will be the same as the schedule for May even though it has not come out yet? It would be a shame to cut our Sicily trip short by a day to wait for a train in Milan that has no schedule yet.

Thanks.

You can assume schedule won’t change much

Just wait-schedules will start to be posted late May to early June
It’s not going to sell out right away if at all

Thanks Christine. I'm not concerned about the train selling out. I'm just trying to figure out our schedule. With the current schedule we can spend 10 days in Sicily before the wedding. If the schedule changes and cannot get us there in the same time on the same day, we will only be able to spend 9 days in Sicily. In addition to wanting to squeeze every last bit out of Sicily that I can, I'm also trying to figure out how many days of hotels to book there. If the schedules don't really change, that would be wonderful.

It is actually closer to 5 1/4 hours, but sorry to say, that is the way it is. The route taking 4 1/4 hours, will be be shut down in part by a construction project starting June 9, and there will be a replacement bus between Milan and Domodossola.

The schedules for July are out now, and they are not the same as what you see for May.

There is a problem on the fastest route between Milan and Grindelwald from early June to early September. That is the route Milan-Spiez- Interlaken Ost - Grindelwald. There is lots of information about it in various posts here, but basically the tracks are closed by construction at one point between Milan and Domodossola. The train will be replaced by a bus, which will take longer.

There are other routes using Swiss trains that are not all shown on Trenitalia; you can use bahn.de or SBB to see these.
