I posted on Switzerland board too but does anyone know the quickest way to get from Milan to Saint Moritz Switzerland for 2 adults and 2 kids and luggage in February? It seems a train to Torino and then the Bernina but that’s like 7 hours of trains. My husband wants to drive but is it a crazy drive?
I think you mean Tirano not Torino ( Turin). But that is not the fastest. There is a train-bus -train combo that will take 5 h 15 min, starting from the MIlano Centrale station. Train to Bellinzona, bus to Thusis, Train to St. Moritz.
If youndrive, what would you do with the car when you arrive? Turning in a car rented in Italy at St. Moritz will incur a still drop fee. Plus in February will need a car equipped with snow tires and chains.
We would drive the car back to Milan. We fly in and out of Milan.
You should think about weather too. February weather in the Alps could leave you cold and stranded. Check the potential driving routes on viamichelin.com, although a quick look suggests it is a 3-4 hour drive, and you will probably need a 4 wheel drive SUV for 4 seats plus 4 suitcases just like in Colorado.
It is not a crazy drive, the road is fairly good in the Italian section, in the Swiss section it has some narrow spots and it is very steep (but not scary) as St. Moritz is quite high in elevation. They try to keep the Maloja pass road open in the winter but in case of very bad weather, but it looks to me that some experience in winter driving is necessary. Also, winter tires are necessary - please note that regulations in Switzerland are different than in Italy.
If you do not have experience in mountain driving, the itinerary with the bus leg Bellinzona-Thusis is the fastest and most practical.
But the rail trip over the Bernina Pass is quite stunning. Many people make it the whole reason for the trip.
