Milan to Saint Moritz, Switzerland (Bernina Express)

I have 2 extra days in Milan in June after my wife and I finish a 10 day visit.

I'm considering going to Saint Moritz on the Bernina Express (with some stops on the way) and spending one night...coming back to Milan the next afternoon.

Anybody done this? It looks absolutely beautiful.

The Bernina Express is reputed to be the best of Switzerland's scenic train rides. After four trips to Switzerland for hiking, we are finally going to ride the Bernina route on our next trip to Italy.

It is 2.5 hours by train from Milano to Tirano where the train ride starts. you may have a wait of 1-2 hours to catch the Bernina Express, less if you take a regional train on the same tracks. Itis 2 hours from Tirano to Pontresina; more to St. Moritz if you go there ( more expensive for an overnight).

Definitely doable if you have two days.

kevin,

I'm not sure how easy it will be to do "stops along the way", but it's certainly feasible to travel from Milan, spend one night in St. Moritz and then return to Milan the following day.

If you want to take the panoramic cars of the Bernina Express, I believe there's only one departure per day in each direction with those (it departs from Tirano at about 13:00 as I recall, but I haven't checked recently). There are numerous "regular" trains however.

I found that sitting on the left (while facing forward) provides better views, but my memory is getting a bit foggy on that point.

I quite enjoyed the scenery traveling the Bernina route by regular, regional trains, even on a somewhat rainy day. www.sbb.ch provides the whole train schedule from Milano Centrale station, but you can't book tickets through that site unless you will pick them up in Switzerland; I'd buy tickets at the train station; the travel agency inside Milano Centrale may have less of a line than the official ticket windows.
