Milan to Paris

Will be traveling from Milan to Paris in October. Any thoughts or comments on train travel for this leg of the trip. Thanks

Both Trenitalia and SNCF have trains on the route. It takes a while, but the views of the Alps as you cross them is great.

It’s 7 hours train journey versus a 90 minute flight.

However when you fly you must add the additional time time for check in/security/boarding/deplaning/baggage claim, plus the time of travel from city center to airport and viceversa, which can easily add at least 3 hours to the 90 min flight time. So overall flying saves only 2+ hours to the overall trip.

Hello Jmo, and welcome to the boards.

Train versus fly is a time savings versus hassle question mostly. The train is slow because of the mountains - it only takes 2 hours from Lyon to Paris but getting into France from Italy over the alps slows everything down. The train ride is long - 7 hours - but is also scenic in parts and generally relaxing. Seven hours on a train is a long time but it is low hassle, one boarding and one arrival in the center of the city. You will land in Paris Gare de Lyon in the 11th arrondissement.

Both Milan and Paris have airports outside the city and both have a farther airport and a closer airport. Charles de Gaulle CDG for Paris and Milan Malpensa MXP are the further ones and Paris-Orly Airport ORY and Milan Linate LIN are closer. This means that flying requires you to reach the outlying airport, fly, and the get back into the city. Flying is still faster but it is worth considering the hassle and cost when comparing the two options.

Be sure you understand which airport you are flying into and out of when booking flights. In my opinion MXP is further but better connected to Milan than LIN and Paris is much easier to reach from ORY than CDG, but others may disagree.

It's obviously up to you - these are the considerations as I see them, but it's been a few years since I took this train.
Have a great trip!
