Note: should i buy the tickets through a travel agent in the US before going on the trip in May?????I need to get from Milan to Nice on May 19th, after staying at Varenna on Lake Como. I checked the Trentitalia site and it says part of the trip from Milan to Nice via Ventimiglia is by bus. Should I travel from Milan to Genoa and then Genoa to Nice or is Milan-Ventimiglia-Nice still the best route? I have tried contacting a travel agent in Milan, but have not had any luck. Any comments will be appreciated. Also, should I buy the tickets here in the US before going?
Thanks for your help.
To go from Milan to Nice you will go through Genoa almost all the time. There was some construction on the railway line between Genoa and Ventimiglia requiring a bus substitution, but I don't see it now. Looks like it is straight through on the IC trains out of Centrale on May 19.
linda,
I just checked the DB website (using an arbitrary date this week), and they don't show any Buses on that route. That may have been a temporary situation due to maintenance on the rail lines.
One of the easiest trips appears to be a departure from Milano Centrale at 09:10, arriving Nice Ville at 14:08 (time 4H:58M, one change at Ventimiglia, which is the border crossing point).
I normally buy tickets when in Europe. Note that the first leg of the above trip requires compulsory reservations (which will be provided with the ticket). In the same situation, I'd probably visit the small travel agency in Varenna when I arrived there and buy my tickets for the outgoing journey from them.
Trenitalia is showing 9 euro Super Economy tickets, or 19 euro first class to Ventimiglia for that day, so it may pay to buy in advance. Normal fare is 30 euro and change.
The line between Ventimiglia and Genoa is partially one track only. On January 17 the line was closed at Andora due to a landslide which caused a train to derail and dangerously stop tilted on the cliff. This incident was all over the Italian news. The derailed train was finally removed on February 24 and after some repairs the rail line was reopened on March 4, ahead of the scheduled March 31 expected reopening.
Book Milan-Ventimiglia now at trenitalia.com to get a Super Economy fare. Buy tickets for Ventimiglia-Nice in Ventimiglia. Trenitalia doesn't sell tickets for that route online and there are no discount fares.
Thank you all for your help. Will buy the tickets from Milan soon.
