Milan to Monterosso Train Question

Just to make sure I'm booking this correctly....

The train station in Monterosso is just "Monterosso"? There is also an option for Monterosso Marche when typing in Monterosso. Also, my understanding is if I book online, I don't have to register? I can just print the ticket from home? The fare is Super Economy so it looks like it's non-changeable anyways. It's 19E total for my wife and I so want to book in advance. Looks like the 12:10-15:03 is the non-stop train?

Just want to make sure I don't mess this up! Thanks! :-)

Yes, for Cinque Terre you want just plain Monterosso, without the Marche. The 12:10 train (IC 665) is a direct train, no changes. Good choice. Those €9 tickets will go fast.

Monterosso Marche is in Marche, the neighborhood of San Marino. So, yes, just plain old Monterosso is the one you want. It is not a non-stop, but I know what you mean, its direct, no changes of train.

Jed,

As the others have said, the station you're going to is called "Monterosso" on the train schedules. The full name of the the town is Monterosso al Mare, but I suspect they don't list that just to avoid confusion with the other one.

A price of €19 sounds like it could either be Super Economy or Economy. If you'd rather not deal with the "registration" aspect of the Trenitalia website, you can also buy tickets at www.italiarail.com (possibly a small fee though).

Thank you for your help! Booked the ticket and got it for 9E each! Now will need to book our return to Milan (heading to Varenna from Monterosso). My understanding is the Milan Varenna ticket can purchase when in Italy because no real price difference.

Jed

EDIT: Just booked the return as well for 9E each! Thanks everyone!

Jed,

Yes, it's just as easy to purchase tickets for Milano Centrale to Varenna-Esino when in Italy, either at a Kiosk or staffed ticket office. You should be able to buy them at the full service station in Monterosso if you have a few spare minutes.

I'd suggest also buying tickets for your outbound journey from Varenna also, as the train station in Varenna is not staffed. That route is actually operated by TreNord. That train is a Regionale, you MUST validate your tickets prior to boarding the train on the day of travel. The trip is 1H:03M and be ready to disembark promptly as the train doesn't stop for long. I'd suggest sitting on the left (when facing forward) so that you can enjoy views of the lake when it comes into view.

With the tickets that you've now purchased for €9 each, those sound like Super Economy. They can only be used on the one train specified on the ticket and are non-changeable and non-refundable.

Buon Viaggio!

Thanks Ken! Sounds like a good plan to buy in Monterosso so we have them in hand when we get to Milan. Our Milan to Monterosso leg we don't need to validate though, correct, since we have seat reservations?

Getting excited for our trip!

You do not need to validate a ticket that shows a seat and carriage number.
