Milan to Marseille

My wife and I are planning a trip to northern Italy and Provence in September. The current plan is to use trains in Italy and then travel to Marseille where we would rent a car for seeing Provence. Then return to Milan where we fly home. Any suggestions on the best way for round trip from Milan to Marseille? I checked Bahn.de and the train schedules seem ok but in trying to check prices, they seem really high. I don't know if I am checking the correct rail services.

www.bahn.de won't be able to sell you tickets between Milan and Marseilles, It is the German railway's site, it can only sell tickets within, to or from Germany.
Try: https://www.captaintrain.com/en
I also tried: https://loco2.com/ which is a UK site and quotes prices in GBP.

The shortest is via Genoa, Nice and along the Mediterranean coast. This takes about 10 hours and cost about £50 (for a random date in May on https://loco2.com/ ).
Beware, the search engines may route you via Geneva and / or Lyon. This is about 1 hour quicker, but can cost twice as much.

Go to trenitalia.it
Then click on the top right hand side where there are three lines and you will open a brown menu.
Then scrolling down, you'll get to contenuti informativi and within that sub menu, click on Altri treni (other trains), then you have viaggi internazionali, click Francia, And the first two cities you will find are Marsiglia ( Marseille) And Paris.

But tell me why are you not flying back from Marseille ?

I am not opposed to flying in both directions but the first look I took inidicated that flying was much more expensive.
