Milan to Livingo

My siblings and I are planning a tour in Italy. It ends in Milan on Oct. 4th. There are 5 of us. Would it be cheaper for us to rent a van to get there? Are there any Homes or apartments for rent in or around Livigno or Isolaccia, or can you suggest a hotel?..Thats where our grandparents are from and we are hoping to meet relative.

Dv,

I'm not familiar with Livigno but had a brief look. A route that should work would be to first take a train from Milano Centrale to Tirano, and then connect with local transportation to Livigno. Have a look at this website - http://www.rome2rio.com/s/Tirano/Livigno

Have a look at this website for hotels in Livigno - http://www.tripadvisor.ca/Hotels-g194799-Livigno_Province_of_Sondrio_Lombardy-Hotels.html

If you'd like to drive, it might be easier to travel part way by train, and then rent a car in Sondrio. Have a look at this website - http://www.viamichelin.com/web/Routes

Note that for driving in Italy, each driver will require the compulsory International Driver's Permit", which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. You'll also have to be vigilant to avoid the dreaded *ZTL (limited traffic) areas, as hefty fines will result if you pass through them.

Hopefully Roberto or one of the others will be able to provide more definite information.

Assuming you're landing in Malpensa or Linate, I'd rent a van at the airport to go straight to Livigno. Once you reach Tirano, you have two options in terms of routes:

1) take Bernina pass route, then turn right toward Forcola pass before reaching Bernina pass.

2) continue straight to Bormio, then follow the road toward Foscagno pass.

They are both very scenic, but please keep in mind that taking option 1 you'll partly drive through Switzerland alongside the world famous Bernina Express train route. Crossing the border at Foscagno pass you'll be back into Italy. On the other hand, route 2 unfolds in all-italian territory; the highlight of it is driving through the tiny hamlet named TREPALLE, Italy's most elevated municipality at some 7000 feet.

If you wish to use public transit, then take the train to Tirano. Direct service between Milano Centrale and Tirano every two hours or so via Lecco. Once in Tirano, a local bus company called PEREGO connects all towns in the area.
Here is the website, italian language only:

You probably know Livigno enjoys a special tax regime: VAT tax is not applied in the area.
