Milan to Lake Como Day Trip

What would be the best advice for gong from Milan to Lake Como for a day trip. Interested in taking the train to the best station in Lake Como to get the ferry to Bellagio and possibly Varenna. Thanks for the help.

I would just take the train from Milan to Varenna. It is just over an hour in length. Be sure to buy a round trip ticket as they do not have a ticket office at the Varenna train station. I would sit on the left side of the train going to Varenna for the best views. Also try and sit in the middle of the train as the Varenna train station is shorter than the length of the train.

You can take the train from Milano Centrale to Varenna. Travel time is about an hour.
Make sure you sit on the left side of the train for best views of the lake.

Make sure you buy your return ticket at Milano Centrale because the tiny station in Varenna does not sell tickets.

You may check train schedules here: http://www.trenitalia.com ( change to English by clicking on British flag on top right)

You will want to choose these stations when using the trenitalia website:
- From: Milano Centrale
- To: Varenna-Esino

When you arrive to Varenna, you can walk down to the ferry dock to take the ferry to Bellagio.

Enjoy your trip!

EDIT:
Don't forget to validate your train tickets before boarding the train! ;-)
Be ready to get off the train once it has gone through the tunnel. The train only stops for a couple of minutes before departing to it's final destination.
