Milan to Grindelwald route

Travelling from Milan to Grindelwald in December, when I investigate trains, I get 2 routes, one via Lucerne and one via Spiez and Interlaken. Wondering which is more scenic. Is there anything else I need to consider when choosing which option?

did you do Rome to Rio? I'm guessing there are LOTS of train options

The fastest route takes four hours. The two scenic routes are # 1. via Domodossola, Spiez and Interlaaken.
If you take this 5.5-hour route, you need to be certain the train you book does not use the tunnel route, which is not the scenic route. The #2 scenic route you referred to goes via Lucerne and takes six hours plus time to change trains twice. After Lucerne, the route takes the spectacular Brunig Pass route on its way to Interlaaken where you change trains for Grindelwald.
Both scenic routes require two or three changes of trains.
Have a great Trip!

I would favor the Spiez route, because to make the Luzern route interesting, you really have to make it much longer. Changing trains in Bellinzona for the old Gotthard railway, and using the slower Luzern-Interlaken direct train instead of the faster route via Bern, would take about 7.5 hours to Grindelwald (not 6).

Thanks, I did look up Rome2Rio and its hard to know which is the best option. We'd prefer to avoid the tunnels and enjoy the scenery and so taking longer isn't an issue. After we leave Grindelwald we got to Lucerne, so we have another chance to enjoy more scenery. We are coming from Australia so it is so different and hence why we want to see as much as we can.
