Milan to Geneva trip ideas

Hi,

I'm flying into Milan (MXP) in early May for a 10-night trip. We will be returning from Geneva so we need to come up with an itinerary that heads from Milan to Geneva. Other than the flights nothing else has been planned. We do not plan to get a rental car so destinations need to be accessible via trains, buses, etc.

As far as to what I like, I tend to just enjoy the scenery, mountains, cities and exploring. I'm not a big art or museum person. I do like visiting old churches and castles. I have done some rather ambitious trips in the past (8 different cities in 12 nights) but would prefer to try and stay in each city 2 nights in most cases.

After a transatlantic flight going from the east coast of the states to Frankfurt to Milan should I just plan to stay in Milan for a couple of nights or head out somewhere else?

There will be just the two of us. I have not been to Italy, at least the northern part before.

Thanks
Rich

I think you can still try to hit several spots in Northern Italy or even other countries that would be outside a direct line from Milan to Geneva.

You could do Italy mostly, Florence, Tuscany (at least Sienna and some well connected towns), Venice would all be very easy and interesting.

Heading into Switzerland, you could take the rail line that passes by Verona and Balzano and into Austria, taking a long arc through Switzerland over to Geneva on the far side.

Or you could also head into Northwest Italy, Turin and over to the mountains heading into France and on to Geneva, possibly swinging more to the coast through Nice and up the West side of the Alps.

As for arrival, Milan would be worth a night, you could also look at the Lake Como area, but I favor not going much further than that my first day.
