Milan to Florence by Train

I will be arriving at the airport (Malpensa) in the morning. Need to take a train to Florence the same day - no real time constraints. I am coming from Atlanta and have to change planes with a fairly short connection. Am I correct in assuming it would be better to wait and buy a ticket when I arrive, just in case? Thanks!

Yes, that's correct. There are numerous train connections from Malpensa to Florence every day (last departure 7:37pm), so unless you arrive very late you're basically assured of getting a same-day train to Florence. You'll pay full fare, but it eliminates the risk of having to purchase another ticket if you arrive later than anticipated.

First, you will have to take a train to the Central train station and then the train to Florence. Base ticket are not super expensive so waiting till you are at the station is not that big a risk.

Today Trenitalia's full fare on that route is 56 € per person, Italo's is 49.90 €.

Unfortunately Italotreno has no counters at the airport, if you don't have a smartphone you'll have to make a second purchase at Milano Centrale to save those 6 €.

Take the MXP train to Milano Centrale, not the one going to Milano Cadorna.
