I am trying to decide whether or not I should get a rail pass or just do individual tickets while doing the Milan, CT, Florence jaunt. I'm staying in Bonassola and can't figure out the train connections from Milan. Any input?
If this is the sum total of your rail travel, by all means get individual tickets. You might still want to go to the "Railpasse" tab at this site to get an idea about the distance and cost. It's VERY informative.
The train from Milan to the CT (Monterosso) goes through Genoa and from the CT to Florence changes trains at La Spezia, which is not a problem. We took the reverse from Florence to the CT for two days, then on from Monterosso to Milan where we caught the night train to Paris. We did NOT have to change trains in Genoa, but I'm not sure about the reverse. Whether you get individual tickets or the railpass, you will need reservations on some that cost extra to book. You can get a daily CT pass that will give you unlimited trips in a 24 hour period back and forth between the towns. Good Luck. It's really not that hard to deal with.
Melanie, you don't need a railpass for Italy. P2P is almost always much cheaper. CLICK HERE to see a typical morning schedule. Note that the 2nd class fare is 20.30Euro. If you are in the CT for a few days, I suggest that you get the Cinque Terre Treno card at any TI office in the CT. It permits unlimited train rides from Levanto to La Spezia and it covers your fares on the hiking trails. From the CT to Florence, the 2nd class fare is 9.20Euro-15.20Euro depending on which kind of train you are on. A railpass is far more expensive.
As I recall, Bonassola is between Levanto and Santa Margherita. Maybe you could look for schedules to one of these towns, then take a train to Bonassola from there. You probably need to go thru Genova.
