Milan to Como

We are arriving at Milan's Malpensa Airport. It is my understanding that to get to Como by train the itinerary is as follows: (1) Take train from Malpensa Airport to Malpensa Nord Station, then (2) take the train from Malpensa Nord Station to Como Nord Lago Station in Como. Is this correct?

Also, can anyone recommend a clean, quiet place or B&B in Como?

Thank you kindly.

CLICK HERE to see the train schedule for 8/20. Schedules further out will be similar. Click on "details" to see more info. I don't see a Malpensa Nord.

Thanks, Larry. Actually, I was able to sort out the train itinerary from Malpensa to Como (there is a transfer in Saronna). As for the lodging....I think I have that covered as well. Thanks again.

Hi Kit - where did you decide to stay at Lake Como? We are doing the same thing in October and want to stay in Como for 2 nights. Thanks for any help!

For those planning to visit Lake Como, I hope it's clear that the town of Como is not in the mid-lake area featured in Rick's videos and books. The town of Como is at the bottom of the southwest "leg" of the lake and a considerable distance from 3 of the mid-lake destinations: Varenna, Bellagio, and Menaggio. In the past some new travelers to this area have mistakenly assumed that Town of Como is synonymous with Lake Como, this is not the case. There's nothing wrong with the town, but it is not the place you've seen in Rick's videos.

Isn't Como a more industrial sort of area ?

Yes Sonia, that's right--although the main problem is that the town of Como is down at the end of the southwest "leg" of Lake Como and thus the views are not the jaw-dropping vistas that you see in the videos and postcards.

Kit. We were in Lake Como area last oct. and took the train from Milan Centrale to Varenna. Beautiful trip up, with nice views of the white Carrera marble mountain region, then along the lake. You can stay in Varenna or take the ferry to other small towns on the lake. We enjoyed our stay on the waterfront overlooking the lake at Hotel Metropole, Bellagio. Check out the cooking class with Chef Moreno ( see Rick's book ) HAVE A GREAT TIME ! Marilyn

Yes, I do understand that the town of Como is at the south end of Como Lago. We will be spending 3 nights in Caddenabria (mid-lake), but needed a place to stay on the evening that we arrive in Milan. We would prefer to spend that night in Como, rather than Milan.

We were planning to spend that night at the Hotel Quarcino in Como. However, it appears to be booked.

So....any other recommendatios for clean, quiet, relatively reasonably-priced lodging in Como near the ferry terminal????

Thank you.

Kit, I stayed at the Best Western Continental Hotel in Como last year. It's a five minute walk from the Como San Giovanni Train station and about a 10 minute walk to where you catch the ferry. It's clean and adequate.

Kent,

It is my understanding that I can catch a ferry from Como to Caddenabria & other towns on Lake Como.

Kit: Yes, you can. But most of the ferries take time to get from the town of Como up to mid-lake. The fastest way to get from town of Como to mid-lake is the hydrofoil, part of the public ferry system but make sure you tell the ticket clerk clearly that you want the hydrofoil.

My greatest apologies ! My husband and I get the "V" towns mixed up sometimes, and it was pointed out to me, by a resident of Varenna, on Lake Como, that the CARRERA marble mountains that I referred to on an earlier post, is NOT on the way to Varenna, but it IS on the way to the Cinque Terres, where we stayed in VERNAZZA ! But the mountains one sees from the train on the way to Varenna are absolutely spectacular !

For my style of travel, I prefer slow ferries that stop at every village. I have never been one to "travel to an itinerary". Admittedly a few plans are nice, but (to paraphrase John Lennon) "life is what happens in between". Thanks, everyone, for your help.

Laurie: I appreciate the compliment, but I'm not Rick. What you said has been suggested before and Rick's staff has asked me to continue to deny that I'm Rick. :)
