Milan to Cinque Terre

We are staying in Riomaggiore and was wanting some thoughts on transportation from Milan to CT. Is it worth driving and stopping along the way or take train? We won't need a car once in CT so can we return it in a different location than Milan?

Take a train. Car is a big hassle in Cinque Terre. Generally very little parking. You cannot drive your car into town.

It can be done with the train in 3 3/4 hour with a single connection in Monterosso. If you don't need a car in the Cinque Terre, why bring one?

Milano Centrele to Monterosso on the InterCity Train. You'll have a seat number. Then change to the Regionale Train from Monterosso to Riomaggiore. Don't forget to validate your ticket for the Regionale train

I knew we didn't need a car in CT. I was thinking of the drive down. Stopping along the way to CT. I guess if we want to head to other towns outside of CT we can take a train?

You will see plenty of scenery once there- go via the train.

There is no place that we recommend stopping and most of your drive will be on a fast highway. Genova is a large, sprawling city, where you won't be tempted to drive.

We are also heading that way...but to Monterosso. Been waiting to be able to book our train...taking forever for mid-june dates to come out?? Anyone else finding this????

I agree with the others that using the trains is the best method for getting to the Cinque Terre. You can easily buy tickets at Milano Centrale for the trip, so you don't necessarily have to buy in advance. If you'll be using one of the direct Intercity trains from Milan to Monterosso, the ticket you buy will include the compulsory seat reservation.

It would help to know whether you'll be taking this trip right after arrival in Milan or whether you'll be in Milan for a few days before going to the C.T.
