Milan to Bologna

We arrive from JFK (NY) to Milan at about 9:00 in the morning on Delta. I assume we will be in Terminal 1. I understand there is a train terminal just outside the airport. I will need to meet my friends in Bologna that morning. I am going to assume that I take a train to Milan Central train station and then change trains to a high speed train to Bologna. Are my assumptions correct or can I catch the high speed train to Bologna directly at the airport?

You will make the connection at Milan Central station and have frequent departures from which to choose. There were just one or two longer-distance trains departing directly from Malpensa Airport last year and they were short-lived.

From the airport there are alternating departures to Milano Centrale and Milano Cadorna, be sure to take a train to Centrale.

The train from Malpensa is not Trenitalia. You need to buy a separate ticket. The manned ticket office does not sell Trenitalia tickets. When I was there in February, none of the machines took cash, only credit cards and my card didn't work. The trains are infrequent. There is also good bus service to Centrale. If the bus is leaving soon and you have a long wait for the train . . .
