If you have experience riding subways in cities like Boston before it's easy. Each car has a big map with all the stops and transfer points to other lines. You could Google AI "How to ride the metro or subway in Milan or something like that or look on YouTube . It can get crowded during rush hours like in most major cities where you may need to stand.

Marybeth, I was a solo traveler for 6 days late in April in Milan and used the subway a lot. I found it easy to figure out and never had an issue with feeling like security was questionable. Take the normal precautions of keeping your purse/bag zipped and in your sight, like in front of you and you’ll be fine.

Milan transit has adopted the contactless tap and go, so you can just tap your debit or credit card or phone w/Apple or Google Pay on the reader at the turnstile. However, unlike other cities in Italy (e.g., Rome) you also have to tap OUT as you exit the turnstile. So just be sure to keep the same payment method handy for your exit.

Trams and local trains are also integrated in the same ticketing system so you're not limited to only subway.

The multi-day passes are incredible value.

I was in Milan for a few days last week. Used the metro to travel between my hotel and train station (did a couple of day trips). I used my credit card to tap in and out. Signage is clearly posted — so you won’t get confused as to which direction to take the train. Also, an electronic board displays when the next train is coming.
