Milan, St. Moritz, Venice

We are flying into Milan (cheapest air) from the States end of September to start a 15 day vacation in Italy. I have always wanted to see Switzerland and since we are so close we plan to do the Bernina express to St. Moritz. Need some advice.

Since we arrive in Milan early in the morning and really don't want to spend time in Milan (just because there is soooo much else we want to do/see) we are thinking of catching the train to Tirano the day we arrive. This would save us some travel time to catch the Bernina express the next day. We could spend a few hours exploring, have a nice dinner and get to bed early for a good rest. We are thinking of doing this just one way and sending the night in St. Moritz rather than backtracking to Milan. The question is about how to get from St. Moritz to Venice which is our next destination? I saw Rhartian railway does a trip that is 8 hrs. and looks like beautiful scenery. How difficult is it to do this? Do you need advance reservations on the train? Our other option is a day trip tour from Milan on the Bernina Express roundtrip and then catching the train from Milan to Venice the next day. If we do this, then we might add on a day going to the lakes from Milan before heading out to Venice.

We plan to only spend 1 night in Venice and then head to Florence. We will be there doing day trips for about 4 -5 days and then heading to Rome for 3 days. If we have time we are trying to decide between spending a couple days on Almafi Coast and visiting Capri, or add on a day or two in Cinque Terre area. So many choices and decisions!! I know - whirlwind trip! Wish we had more time, but I don't. I doubt we will ever be able to return for a number of reasons :( We want to see all we can but we also want to enjoy what we do. We don't mind long busy days.

Milan and Venice are on the south side of the Alps, St. Moritz on the north side. Don't be fooled by the relative closeness: once you begin traveling in the Alps, everything goes very slowly and you are forced to a limited selection of possible itineraries. The quickest way to reach Venice from St. Moritz is, well, backtracking to Milan. There could be an alternative itinerary through Malles/Mals and Merano, it involves something like 5 changes and bus rides, on a good day you could try it but be sure you have understood it and you do not get lost.

You might want to save Switzerland for the end of your trip. Easiest by far, is to go directly to Venice from Milan after landing.

I agree with the points above. In addition, since Cinque Terre is on your way back from Rome to Milan, I would choose that over the Amalfi coast/Capri, or else I would add an extra day each to Venice and to St. Moritz (to go up some mountain lifts and hike a bit).

Like other said...save St. Moritz to the end of your trip. We're doing a Venice--Florence--Rome Rick Steves trip starting next week and after that..we go back to Milan.

Take the Bernina Express to St. Moritz...spend a day and then you can take a bus from St. Moritz to Chiavenna..and then a train from Chiavenna back to Milan. You'll get to see some of Como as well.

You never really back track and see some beautiful scenery.

I'm doing this in mid-June.

Sankt Moritz to Venice is a wonderful journey, but it very slow and time-consuming:

Train from Sankt Moritz to Scuol-Tarasp. (Rhb bahn).
Bus from Scuol-Tarasp to Malles Venosta. (Postbus).
Train from Malles Venosta to Merano. (SAD).
Train from Merano to Bolzano. (Trenitalia).
Train from Bolzano to Venice. (Trenitalia or OBB).

Better save it for a next trip, maybe Alps-only.

Thanks for all of your advice! I think we will save the train to Switzerland for the end of the trip and then it will be St. Moritz back to Milan which is easier and faster than getting from there to Venice : )

Rather than back track to Milan I would go on to Innsbruck then down to Venice
Also 2 nights in Venice after all the travelling you will have done.

Tirano (1)
Bernina Express to St Moritz (1)
Innsbruck (1)
Venice (2)
Florence (4)
Amalfi Coast (3)
Rome (3)

I would definitely add a nite to Venice if possible. Otherwise you have just a part of each day. If you stay 2 nites you can probably see most of what you would like to see and not feel so rushed. And if you want you could take the boat to Burano for a little relaxation and diversion. End of Sept. it could be quite hot, or quite cool at the sea, so I would be flexible where these locations are concerned.
