I will be in Milan for 6 days on business. In between meetings I am going to see Milan. But I do have one day with nothing planned (amazing). I was thinking of getting out of the city - what do you recommend? Something close by, via public transportation.
No question, go to Lake Como rec. Varenna.
Take rain from Milan central to varenna and enjoy the beauty. Have lunch stroll, if you have more time ferry from Varenna to Bellagio and back for return train to Milan. low cost, sht train ride and walk everywhere in Varenna(lunch here) and or Bellagio. have fun it is gorgeous.
You didn't give any indication when you will be in Milan. Ordinarily, a good day trip is Lake Como, specifically the mid-lake area formed by the triangle formed roughly by Varenna - Bellagio - Menaggio. But that's only a good idea if you're not there too late in the season.
Take the train to Bergamo and take the funiculare up the hill to see the Città Alta, the medieval upper part of the city. The train takes about half an hour from Milan to Bergamo. Definitely worth seeing, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
We will be in Milan August 22 - 28th. Does this affect a trip to Lake como?
