Milan or Rome

We have been to Rome before and seen all of the major sites. Our current itinerary: 3 nights Rome or Milan 3 nights Cinque Terre area Genova 7 Nights Lake Como this can't be changed 2 nights Dolomites 2 nights Venice Will train travel be easier from Milan? Is there enough to see in Milan? It seems to be easier access to Cinque Terre and Lake Como? We love Rome will we be disappointed?

Milan is not Rome but for your itinerary you can get around very effecirntly from the northern base of Milan. We stayed in Milan for a week 2 years ago and found plenty to do. I think you'll be fine for 3 days especially getting over jet lag before you start traveling around.

Bologna maybe? I have never been but am going in December and it looks like a neat place with easy daytrip connections by rail.

For your overall trip, Rome would be way out of the way. I personally don't care much for Milan, but it is worth a couple days.

In Italy there is a saying: Roma, non basta una vita - for Rome, one lifetime is not enough.

Plenty to do in Milano for 2+ days: Castello Sforzesco, Brera Gallery, Duomo (with the lift to the roof), Santa Maria delle Grazie (Leonardo's Last Supper, get tickets in advance), and great shopping (window or otherwise).
