I'm working on an itinerary for a 21 day trip, and realized that I need to drop one or the other of these sites. We will be seeing Venice, Florence, Rome, the CT, Siena, Sorrento and Naples. In your opinion which of the two would be more important to visit? This is my first trip to Italy. Thanks!
Kathryn,
While Milan does have a few significant places to visit (ie: The Last Supper, Duomo, etc.), Lago di Como would be a much better choice. Using Varenna as a "home base", you could visit several places on the lake (Bellagio, Mennagio or the town of Como, etc.).
Happy travels!
I visited Milan and Lake Como about 8 years and would suggest to visit Lake Como. Though Milan is a nice and trendy city, you would see a lot of similar stuff in other big cities like Romo.
Como is nice with Alps in the background and you can drive uphill.
Have a great trip!!
You don't say what time of year you're visiting but assuming it's not the dead of winter, I would visit Lake Como, and as Ken suggested, stay in Varenna and visit the other mid-lake towns via ferry. Lake Como will be a nice change of pace from the other places you're visiting.
If you are able to fly open-jaw, you could fly into Rome & out of Milan. Lake Como is about an hour and a half from Milan's Malpensa airport. We finished our trip last September in Lake Como & flew out of Malpensa. Flying open-jaw would eliminate back-tracking and save time. Have a great trip.
Thanks, everyone, for your advice. Lake Como, it is! (If I can still get a reservation, that is.) Otherwise I'm thinking of Stresa.
Try albergo Oliveda in Varenna. Great place! Jeff
