Hello! I am trying to decide between Milan and Genoa for three to four days in mid-April, after which I'll be heading to Venice for four days (my second visit there, but I've never visited any of these other cities) including a day trip to Verona, three days in Trieste, two days in Ljubljana, and six days in Istanbul.
A little about me: I'm a 31-year-old woman, living in a major US city. This will be my sixth trip to Europe, and I'll be traveling solo. I've traveled solo in the past to Paris, Amsterdam, London, Edinburgh, and Budapest, as well as traveling alone in the US and Canada.
What I love when traveling are walkable cities, historic neighborhoods/city centers, art nouveau architecture/design, art museums (not contemporary art or 18th-century art so much, but everything else), street art, and cemeteries. I'm not interested in shopping or nightlife, and while I love a good meal as much as anyone, I probably don't qualify as a foodie -- food isn't going to be make or break for me! My favorite European cities I've visited so far have been Lisbon, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Budapest, and the quieter neighborhoods of Venice.
In Milan, the major sights that interest me are the Duomo, the Cimitero Monumentale, Chiesa di San Maurizio, Pinacoteca Brera and the Brera quarter, and Santa Marie delle Grazie.
In Genoa, the various palaces, Musei di Strada Nuova, the Stade Nuove quarter, Santa Maria di Castello, Piazza di Ferrari, Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, the Corso Italia walk to Boccadasse, and the Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno look really interesting to me.
I'd be flying into Milan and would need to take the train to Genoa, so it's more of a logistical challenge. However, it might be more appealing as a destination, even if it's more traveling around from Milan Malpensa to Genoa and then Genoa to Venice.
Thank you for any advice or insight you can provide. I've been reading a lot of travel forums and people don't seem to talk about either Genoa or Milan much.
Take care,
Sarah
