Milan or Cinque Terre

Let me start by saying that I do realize these places are vastly different!
My husband and I are taking a 3 week trip at the end of October into November. The general itinerary is:
Fly into Milan
Como 2 days
Venice 3 days
Florence 3 days
Tuscany 2 days
Rome 4 days
Positano 2 days
Then the last few days are my question. We had originally planned to head to Cinque Terre for 3 days and fly back out of Milan, missing any sights there. I am now considering by-passing Cinque Terre altogether, adding another day to Positano/Amalfi and spending remaining time in Milan to see the cathedral and last supper. We are both outdoorsy and art/architecture enthusiasts-hence the dilemma. Would greatly appreciate any thoughts? (Except those that say how crazy my schedule is. Haha!)

I was in Cinque Terre and it was one of the best places I visited with Rick Steves tour. I highly recommend you going there.

I loved our visit to CT years ago, but I don't know if the weather will be optimal in November. We were there in early October, & it was still nice, but I think November may be rainy.

Yes, your itinerary is a bit rushed for my taste, but hey, it's your trip!

Enjoy!

Edit to add... We were in Varenna in early October, two years ago, & we enjoyed one sunny day & two drizzly days. I hope the weather cooperates when you're there ;-)

We will be in Cinque Terre on a cruise in November and then back to Milan.

I've been researching what to do for the day on our cruise, and lots of places in CT are closed for the season once November rolls around. You might want to look into that. I think that includes hotels, too.

If you decide to go to Milan, I've been told you need to pre-book tickets to the Last Supper. Tickets for November, if you want to go by yourself and not on a city tour, go on sale starting September 7, so decide soon, as my understanding is that they sell out very fast. The web site to book is www.cenacolovinciano.net.

Also, not sure if you'd still be in Milan, but starting November 13, the American opera Porgy and Bess will be showing at La Scala. We are not opera buffs, but seeing one in English is much more appealing than one in Italian. Those tickets go on sale September 14.

Hope this helps. And, I hope I'm correct on my information!

Thank you for your help! We have opted to save Cinque Terre for another visit-maybe outside of the rainy season. I appreciate your advice.

First I actually think your schedule is well planned assuming that your not backtracking much. Are you flying out of Naples?
If your arriving at Como on the day that you fly in I would add another day there. We enjoyed exploring using Como as a base. If I could do it again i would have stayed more in Bellagio/Varenna/Mengaggio and I believe there is a cool island with a castle on it and some restaurants. I liked Como but I loved Bellagio......and the cute smaller places off the ferry that we traveled to. We were in Como for three days and it was plenty and we did do a solid day away exploring. If you like handbags we found some Pratesi firenze bags (i am in love) at a cute place in one of the towns I believe Bellagio. Don't worry if you miss them there is another place in florence. We loved walking around those cute towns and there is a ferry that leaves from Como that allows you to explore however some are express and some are not and given that you are on a time schedule you do not really get a lot of time if you wish to explore more or stay longer. Maybe try to stay a night at one of those towns.....They are beautiful and there are a lot of trails if you do like hiking.

Also there is a cool castle in rome i recommend. Castel St Angelo - very fun and open late. Hidden rooms that have wonderful art. Walkway to vatican as well.

Lake Como is also quiet that late in the year, with quite a few restaurants and hotels closed in November in Varenna, for instance. But if you only need one, then I'm sure you could find one.

THats sounds like a fantastic tour.. we flew in and out of Milan when we visited Lake Como earlier this year, and I would'nt have missed it for the world. It is such an interesting old city. We didn't manage to see inside the cathedral, but the outside and piazza and famous historic shopping malls where just as interesting. Amazing coffee shops and galleries..

We loved the town of Como so much we plan to go back and stay longer. We visited Bellagio but prefer Como. You will love it.

Cinque Terre has tiny, quiet villages. Milano is a large, noisy city. It depends on what you prefer (although The Last Supper was awesome!)
