Milan opera suggestion other than La Scala?

We hope to see an opera at La Scala when we visit Milan but with our schedule it looks like we may be looking for an alternative. We are wondering if there are any other recommended opera houses which might be good alternatives but just as beautiful and enjoyable.

Any suggestions?

When will you be there? Will you be in other Italian cities where you might consider going to the opera?

Depends on when you'll be there, as the opera houses operate on a season. That said, there are almost always concerts that you could go to in various venues.

Laurel, we will be there Wed., 16 May, this year. Our flight arrives in Milan that morning, and in the afternoon we are going to see the Last Supper. (Our arrival day was the only day we could get tickets for our entire group to see the Last Supper, so we decided to just do it!... gonna be SO tired!) We'll have a few hours to kill before that, but we think after our viewing appointment we will really just want to go on to our AirBnb in Varenna. We will be in Varenna that Thurs/Fri, and will head on to Florence on Saturday. We could go to an opera in another city, but we thought it would be more fitting to do in Milan. We'll also be staying in Sorrento on this trip.
Micheal, we may just need to look into it once we arrive and see what is around and what is playing.

Thanks y'all!

I was hoping you were going in summer and would have a stop in Verona as the opera in the Arena is magnificent.

I did find crazy-expensive Aida tickets on the 18th at La Scala. (Euro 360 per person.)
