Milan (MXP) airport customs, immigration, baggage, and connecting flight timing

I will be landing at Milan's MXP Terminal 1 on a Wednesday at 12:15 and will need to go through immigration, customs and retrieve baggage and make a connecting flight to Palermo in Terminal 2. I currently have a ticket for a 2:25 PM (14.25) plane to Palermo, but I'm worried about missing the connecting flight. How long do you think I need to go through the processes of customs, immigration, picking up baggage and making my connecting flight?

Thank you,

Warren

Is this a single ticket or two separate bookings?

I have flown into Milan three times. Each time is was very efficient-except for baggage.

I would consider doing carry on only.

I can't do carry on only. And as noted I need to go from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 to make my connecting flight to Palermo. it seems like I'm not giving myself enough time. Does this mean I should cancel my flight and reschedule?

I certainly would not. You don't really have two hours. Many check-in desks close at 45 minutes prior to departure so you might have till 1.40 to check in for your next flight. If you plane is on time it could be 12.30 or maybe 12.40 by the time you off and now you have an hour to get through immigration and customs, get the check-in and recheck your luggage, back through security, and to you gate. Most of the time an hour is probably adequate but I have also been caught in immigration lines for a couple of hours or more. Rare but it happens. If you miss the flight, what is the back up plan? If you can handle a high stress level, and move fast, it might work if everything clicks.

In addition to what stated above there is the bus transfer from T1 to T2, which might eat up precious minutes.

If you go before the end of this year be aware that Malpensa is currently handling all flights from Milan Linate airport (currently under major renovation). That means that Malpensa is currently handling 25,000 more passengers a day than normally, or an extra 50% traffic compared to normal times.

I thank you all for these replies. I will proceed to cancel my flight as it's within the 24 hour purchase period, so there shouldn't be a price penalty.
