In October we will be flying into Milan then need to travel to Lugano, then on to Appenzell. We have a train pass for travel in Switzerland so we just need to find the quickest way form Malpensa airport to Lugano, to travel onward to Appenzell. Any suggestions? Airport express into Milan Central or any local trains from Malpensa to Lugano?
Due to opening in 2017 of a short connecting railway, there are now hourly direct trains between Biasca - Bellinzona - Lugano - Mendrisio and the two terminals of MXP airport. You can find the timetable on sbb.ch; it is line S50 of the Tilo network (joint railway network of Ticino in Switzerland and Lombardia in Italy).
Would you happen to know if my Saver Day Pass purchased from SBB is valid for the trip from Malpensa to Lugano?
I've been doing similar research for a trip in early September. The S50 looks to be the best choice. Visit: https://www.trenord.it/en/routes-and-timetables/services/regional-routes. Click on Tickets until you get to the screen where you can enter departure and arrival stations and times. Looks to be about 1.5 hours from the airport to Lugano.

No, only from the first station in Switzerland, Stabio.
Thank you for the quick responses. I assumed the pass would only be valid in Switzerland. Happy travels all!
A ticket from Malpensa to Lugano with a Saver Day Pass is 14 CHF, which is only a savings of 10.40 CHF over the full fare price. I assume you will be continuing on to Appenzell that day, otherwise why buy a Saver Day Pass.
