Milan/Malpensa Airport to Florence SMN, most efficient way to do this?

Hello. My husband and I will be traveling through Italy next month and will be arriving at Milan/Malpensa mid-afternoon on a weekday. We will be saving a Milanese city visit for the last couple of days before departing home again at the end of our vacation. We have planned to first visit Florence and I would like some advice on the most efficient, or practical, way to do this from Milan/Malpensa once we have deplaned. In advance, than you.

After you have your bags, follow the little train icon to the airport train station, buy ticket to Milano Centrale (12 euro) and make sure you get on the right train. They go about every half hour and you will be at Milano Centrale train station in 50 minutes after the train pulls out. Buy ticket to Firenze SMN. Should be a departure at least onc an hour.

Litha,

The easiest and quickest method is travel by train. Here's the route to follow....

  • Once you've collected luggage, make your way to the airport rail station and buy tickets.
  • You'll first need to take the Malpensa Express from MXP to Milano Centrale. That train is a Regionale so DON'T forget to validate your tickets prior to boarding the train or you'll risk hefty fines. One other point to note is that the M.E. has two routes, one to Centrale and one to Cadorna, so be sure to board the correct train. The trip will be about 52 minutes.
  • At Milano Centrale, check the electronic board for the Binario (Track No.) for your next train. The train number will be listed on your tickets (ie: ES-9537).
  • Board the Freccia high speed train to Florence listed on the ticket. If you're not sure, ask one of the officials (there will probably be one standing outside the train). Note that your destination station will be Firenze S.M. Novella. You'll have an assigned Car No. (Carrozza) and Seat No's. (Posti) on that train. The trip will be about 1H:40M if you use one of the direct trains.

You can see all the rail solutions on the Trenitalia website, which will give you an idea of the departure times and other details.

What time is exactly mid-afternoon? The last train to Florence from Milano Centrale is at 8.15pm. If your plane is scheduled to land at 4.00pm you should have plenty of time, but if it is landing at 6.00pm you may make it or not according to queues at immigration and baggage retrieval.
