Milan / Lake Como / Zermatt ??

hi all! Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions - we have 5 adults (bringing our 3 adult children before they all fly the coop) traveling to & from Milan this August. We arrive late at night on Tuesday August 6th and depart from Milan early morning Sat. August 17th. This is for my husband's 60th birthday, on the 14th (so suggestions for a great meal that night are also appreciated). We are at a loss of where to go & what to see and would love suggestions -
my first thought was to rent a house/apt at Lake Como for 8 nights Aug. 7 - 15 and then back to Milan for the last day and a half to see the sights there. Being so close, it would be tough to miss seeing the Matterhorn, even if a day trip. Is it a good idea to rent a car and take day trips all around the region or is it better to maybe stay in another town rather than on the lake for a home base? We are all very active, but didn't like the hectic pace of changing hotels every two days or so last time we traveled to Italy (We saw Rome, Florence & area, Cinque Terre, Venice) The idea of a home base where we can return to each evening and relax is appealing. Would love your suggestions ~ Thanks!

Sounds nice. I thought maybe your rental might be easier to arrange if you go Saturday to Saturday. That is often they the owners in resort areas prefer. So that would give time for seeing Milan on arrival. The Matterhorn is a bit of an awkward drive from lake Como, but would be a snap from Lake Magiorre. Stresa in nice and there other towns along the lake that must be equally attractive. It is also not far from Malpensa, so you can get there quickly Saturday morning. Lake Como gets all the press, but there is nothing wrong with Magiorre.
You know you have to park at Taesch and take the train there to Zermatt. Its 8 chf pp each way.

Thanks, Sam - I've been looking at some places in Maggiore & will give that more consideration.
